Robert Ivy, a businessman and architect, is the Chief Executive Officer of the American Institute of Architects. He is leading the society’s projects of interdisciplinary collaboration and initiatives of public health and community-based projects.
The American Institute of Architects is an organization for professional architects, and it is membership-based. The Institut has focused on the renown of the profession, and designing and constructing buildings, as well as innovation in the professsion. CEO Rober Ivy encourages the society to extend their efforts beyond their field of work as well. Robert Ivy believes that architecture can benefit the public in more ways than establishing building. Architecture can improve health, provide solutions for protection from natural disasters, and help with sustainable living, among else.
According to Robert Ivy, architecture has played a role in public health for decades. As examples, he provided the Central Park in New York which was structured the way it was to conceal substandard housing, instead of as a recreational space. Modern architecture and the new generation of professionals think about more than the aesthetic of the building. They consider buildings are prompting people to squeeze in some extra physical activity such as having to go up the stairs, design windows with an emphasis on letting in sunlight as the primary source of illumination, and allowing fresh air to ventilate the building as well. Fountains in buildings also humidify the air naturally, adding to public health. Selecting sustainable materials that do not release chemicals into the air is also a way to contribute to public health.
The AIA has been involved in creating apps as well. Ivy says that when architects, engineers, and designers engage in the same project such as apps, they can create something measurable at a low cost. Ivy believes that establishes interdisciplinary connections and can lead to future-bringing ideas because the greatest thing will not happen in isolation.
In conclusion, Ivy has a strong sense of collaboration. He believes that when disciplines are brought together, experts can achieve the imaginable. While architects have actively entered interdisciplinary partnerships, now working with programmers, engineers, technicians, and so on, there are still several things that Ivy wants to change. One of the main priorities of Ivy and the American Institute of Architects is to find substantial evidence on how buildings improve the public health and well-being. Previously, studies on the matter have predominantly focused on lighting. We know that certain types of places make people more productive and achieve with ease to some extent, and vice versa. Still, there are no extensive architecture studies tracking which buildings have that impact. Having such studies available would allow architects to correct the structures that do not contribute to productivity or well-being. Read more:https://www.aiadc.com/about
