The AIA, Protecting our Environment and Building our Future

The American Institute of Architects, is a professional organization, also, operating as an NGO. The organization was started in 1857, by only 13 members. The organization started in New York City as the New York Society of Architects. The current location is in Washington, DC. Being an NGO, the organization has a strong impact on politics. As the group states, “We speak up, and policymakers listen.”

The AIA makes strong commitments to both its members and, the general public as well. The necessity of remaining politically active is simply understood. The group must protect the profession, and, its success depends upon policies that are environmentally conscious, and, practical for the current infrastructure.

With such a strong commitment, the strongest ethical considerations must be, adhered to and practiced. These considerations are, present in the statement titled “Our standards.” These standards are expressed as the following:

  • Antitrust compliance
  • Attribution of credit
  • Bylaws
  • Code of Ethics
  • Using the AIA designation

The AIA website, which can be located at, further explains the standards in greater detail.

Another aspect of this NGO is the board by which the organization is represented. The group is headed up by Robert A. Ivy, FAIA, who has served as the Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer since, 2011. Robert Ivy is credited with advancing the organization by raising social awareness of the impact of architecture, and, the architects that influence the world around us.

A top issue that’s been identified by the AIA is sustainability. It’s simply expressed in their statement: “We work to advance policies and design practices that improve energy conservation, the health of communities and resiliency in every community.”We work to advance policies and design practices that improve energy conservation, the health of communities and resiliency in every community.”

The work of Robert Ivy and, his team of executives are working towards sustainability in many ways. The best way to understand this concept is by, the breakdown of topics included in this topic. The topics include design and health, energy, materials, and, resilience. The main focus is energy. The group supports EISA Section 433. This legislation deals primarily with the reduction of fossil fuel usage in energy, more specifically, within federal buildings. There are many myths, which are dispelled by the AIA. More information relating to this topic can be found on their website at

The AIA, under the leadership of Robert Ivy, has, and, continues to strengthen the impression of architects, within the US and beyond. Being committed to the principals upon which it was founded, the AIA continues to stand up to harmful policies attempting to be advanced in Washington. Learn more:
